Beyond the Box Initiative
Political & Advocacy
The main goal of the Beyond the Box Initiative is to provide a support system for prospective and current students who have been impacted by the criminal justice system. We will help outline long term solutions to increase access to higher education and other opportunities for people returning home after having been incarcerated, therefore creating better life opportunities for low-income communities of color. The group will serve to help incoming students—who have been impacted by mass incarceration—transition into an academic curriculum by providing peer counseling, mentoring, scholarship information, and other resources. We will serve our community by advocating on behalf of previously or currently incarcerated individuals, we will perform outreach to unite students to grassroots organizations that could provide support as a way to alleviate the effects of having been incarcerated, especially the effects that create obstacles which would interfere with acquiring an education (e.g., housing and financial assistance).

Beyond the Box Initiative will link the work of scholars who are doing research around the phenomenon of mass incarceration in the United States with one that is grounded in the lived experiences of the students who have been directly impacted.

Beyond the Box Goals:

Survey the needs of current and prospective students in the United States who have been impacted by mass incarceration, to best determine where this population has the most need of support.

Provide supportive services that are essential to achieving their academic goals (e.g., housing, scholarships, mentorship, counseling, tutoring, etc.).

Evaluate how programmatic administrative improvements can be devised and implemented.

Educate and support faculty and staff on the issues and needs of formerly incarcerated students.

Ensure that formerly incarcerated students are prepared for success and are made aware of all available resources without feeling followed by their history.

Create a media campaigns to extend the reach and influence of our advocacy.

Resources and programs that are available to people who have been impacted by incarceration are in a state of constant change. Therefore, Beyond the Box will be a flexible project that changes in regulations. By developing a network of professionals in the field of criminal justice reform we will be able to continually update our approaches.
