In a few words, Kendo is a Japanese martial art which trains the mind and body and cultivates one's character through one-on-one combat using a bamboo sword while wearing traditional clothing and protective equipment. But it is in fact much more than that: kendo is a lifetime commitment to a way of self-discipline, technique, etiquette, responsibility, and fellowship. It is those values that our Sensei, Noboru Kataoka - one of the most accomplished swordsmen in the United States -, is dedicated to promote during every practice. In teaching every class for the past 30 years, Kataoka-sensei has developed and refined teaching methods that emphasize strong basics and pronounce the elegance of the art. His step-by-step teaching methods stress correct form and make grasping the fundamentals of Kendo easy and fun. Most uncommon, Kataoka Sensei’s method allow a student with the busy schedule of New York City life to experience steady and recognizable growth. He currently holds the rank of 7th Dan, and presides over the All Eastern US Kendo Federation to which the club is affiliated with. This year we plan on hosting the very first Columbia Kendo Tournament, adding to the ones we attend every year such as the Cornell Kendo Tournament, the Rutgers Kendo Tournament or the Harvard Shoryuhai. We always welcome new members from the Columbia community. No prior experience in any martial art is necessary! In fact, practically all current members had never studied a martial art before joining CU Kendo.
