CU Raqs Sharqi first began as CU Bellydance when co-founder Sara started to offer dance lessons to students every Friday night. Soon a small but dedicated group developed, performing at campus events and parties. CU Bellydance gained official University recognition in Spring 2008. Since then, they have become known across campus as well as in the NYC community. They perform original choreography in a variety of styles, including Egyptian, Turkish, American Cabaret, Tribal, and other fusion styles. This dedicated group of dancers also founded the first annual intercollegiate bellydance event, the Middle Eastern Dance Conference. The organization is committed to sharing Middle Eastern culture with the Columbia community through the region's music and dance as well as introducing innovative and informed fusion dance techniques. In the interest of more accurately reflecting the cultural origins of the dance form, the group decided to officially change its name to CU Raqs Sharqi, referencing the term in Arabic for Middle Eastern dances for the stage with some nuances of influence from other dance forms around the world. CU Raqs Sharqi (also known as CU Raqs) now performs at a variety of campus events, in addition to offering classes open to the Columbia community which cater to dancers of all levels of experience.
