MANSA (Muslim Afro Niyyah Students Association) serves to provide a space on Columbia University’s campus and surrounding community for Muslims of the African Diaspora. MANSA is named after Malian King Mansa Abubakari, who travelled West 200 years before European settlers, serves to recognize and highlight the depth and impact Islam has had on the African continent. Niyyah (الهدف) is an Islamic act that best translates to intention. The intention of this organisation in its purest form is to create a space for Muslims of the African Diaspora (African continent, Afro-Arabs, Afro-Latinos, Afro-Indigenous, Afro-Americans & Afro-Europeans) to feel comfortable in the Islamic community and create dialogue that will progress into actions that physically manifest diversity and inclusion of the Muslim faith.
