Kendo (剣道), or "the way of the sword", is a competitive sport that finds its origins in traditional Japanese swordplay. Commonly referred to as "Japanese fencing", practitioners of Kendo compete using bamboo swords to score points on an opponent in full-contact matches.Kendo is a sport based off of the teachings of Hokushin Itto Ryu, a style of Kenjutsu(art of the Japanese sword) which originated in the early 1800s. Founded by the last sword saint Chiba Shusaku Narimasa, the teachings of this style are still partially present in Kendo, primarily through choreographed techniques called "kata".
