American Society of Heating, Refrigerating & Air Conditioning Engineers
Academic
We are the Purdue University Student Branch of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), a society that was formed by a merger in 1959 of the American Society of Heating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHAE), founded in 1894, and The American Society of Refrigerating Engineers (ASRE), founded in 1904. Since 1948, we have been active on the West Lafayette campus and, as of 2024, also on the Indianapolis campus, advancing the arts and sciences of heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigerating to serve humanity and promote a sustainable world. The society and its members focus on building systems, energy efficiency, indoor air quality, and sustainability within the industry. Through our local chapter (Central Indiana Chapter), we are part of an international organization with more than 50,000 members. Embedded in a global network, we provide scholarships, professional support in the form of publications and handbooks, and help students network and launch careers in the field of HVAC&R. The regular attendance of ASHRAE conferences gives students a platform to publish and present research and ensures close contact with industry professionals.Purdue West Lafayette and Purdue Indianapolis offer HVAC related courses and give students opportunities for internships and participation with the ASHRAE student chapter. With our work in the student branch, we strive for continuous improvement and innovation in all our practices and products, always reflecting the best practices that lead our industry. Our aim is to create a sustainable future by improving energy-efficient building technology and components and promoting the electrification of society and industry through applications such as heat pumps. We are open to students from all fields of research who are passionate about serving the built environment, creating value, and recognizing the accomplishments of others. ASHRAE is committed to the highest ethical standards. We work transparently, observing essential requirements for due process and peer reviews to assure our members and stakeholders that we do the right things the right way.
