The Brain Exercise Initiative is a student run non-profit organization that uses math, reading and writing as a form of cognitive development for the elderly. It is found that simple math exercises and reading aloud for just 30 minutes a day can have a positive impact on memory for those with Alzheimer's. This is currently being done extensively in Japan. It was discovered by a Japanese neuroscientist, Ryuta Kawashima, and consists of math exercises and reading aloud of short stories. Done for just 30 minutes a day, 5 times a week, improvements in Alzheimer’s patients have been observed. It is currently being done in 1,400 care homes with 15,000 Alzheimer's patients all over Japan and has had great success. Many individuals showed improvements in communication and behavior. Some went from being bedridden to sitting in a chair or walking and many began to feel happier. Here is some of the research that has been done already:https://www.tohoku.ac.jp/en/research/research_highlights/research_highlight_22.htmlhttps://academic.oup.com/biomedgerontology/article/60/3/380/630607 We currently have chapters at 50 universities including UCLA, Harvard, Columbia, Cornell, Notre Dame, Brown and numerous others. We go to retirement homes for about 30-45 minutes a day and do simple math (addition, subtraction etc), reading aloud and writing exercises with the elders.  We are currently looking for volunteers to be a part of our nonprofit. As a volunteer, you would be going to a retirement home and holding these exercises with the seniors. We would love to have committed people on our team. Our application for the Fall 2023 semester is now closed. Please fill out this Spring 2024 interest form for next semester to receive updates. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdDDM4EbgfUENtlF7FzoIGnG-5grKr7qeXcn6Q2YqvjlMx-iA/viewform
