Purdue University Tagore Society (PUTS) came into existence in the year 2002. Since then, it has been an integral part of the life on campus through various cultural and social activities. A part of its mission has been showcasing, in and around the campus, the Bengali culture which is deeply influenced by the work and philosophy of the Nobel laureate, poet and author Rabindranath Tagore.PUTS has encouraged and financed a number of play productions based on well known works of various authors and playwrights. These performances have been well received at the West Lafayette campus, as well as in Indianapolis (IN), Cincinnati (OH), Louisville (KY) and Chicago (IL).PUTS organizes a variety of cultural events on the occasion of Rabindra Jayanti, Durga Puja, Saraswati Puja, Diwali, Holi, Bengali New Year. PUTS also arranges for special movie screenings regularly throughout the year.In the past, some of the notable events PUTS has organized include - large scale fund raising for the 2005 Tsunami victims, setting up the first Bengali library on West Lafayette campus of Purdue, hosting annual cultural nights, celebrating the Republic Day of India, inviting artists for Indian classical dance concerts and so on.Currently, PUTS organizes the following kinds of activities :Cultural Events - PUTS coordinates cultural events like drama, dance, recitation, singing at Puja events and also standalone concerts with internationally acclaimed artists from all across the globe. In the past we have invited Chandrabindoo, Somlata and the Aces, Penn Masala, Sahana Bajpaie, and othersMovie Nights - PUTS holds movie night sessions to spread the awareness about the Bengali film industry to a broader audiencePicnics - PUTS organizes picnics and potlucks where students, faculties and their family socialize.Sports Events - PUTS participates in intramurals and organizes tournaments like Table Tennis, Badminton, Cricket etc.Professional Developmental talks: Talks by professors, Purdue alumni, etc. about how to navigate life in graduate school, academia vs industry, and other career topics All our activities are open to all, and everyone is welcome.
