Recent studies have underscored strong evidence linking the graduation of first-generation medical students, with their dedication to practicing medicine and serving Californians. The Homegrown Cafe Student Interest Group at UC Davis is dedicated to cultivating a nurturing community that celebrates the distinctive perspectives of first-generation students, and also fosters their professional growth and development. Our primary aim is to establish a robust network of peers and mentors dedicated to preserving and amplifying the voices of first-generation individuals within the medical sphere. Through quarterly gatherings, research endeavors, and mentorship initiatives, we aim to empower students in navigating the complexities of medical education while advocating for diversity and inclusivity across various specialty fields. By furnishing resources, mentorship opportunities, and academic support, via networking with upperclassmen and alumni residents/attendings, our goal is to nurture a cohort of homegrown physicians committed to serving underserved communities and addressing the healthcare challenges specific to California. Our mission is to inspire and equip students with the tools and support needed to excel academically, professionally, and personally on their medical journey.
