Stempower recognizes the monopoly of the STEM industry in terms of demographics. Data from 2021 regarding STEM fields demographics shows that 69% of STEM employees are White, there is nearly a 40% average of women across all STEM fields, and substantially low demographics on other minoritized groups (ie. LGBTQ+ STEM workers, Black, Asian, Indian, and Hispanic employees, or immigrant workers employed in STEM in the US). Stempower aims to empower the next generation of all the listed minority groups within STEM fields. Through community work in many different and growing partnerships (namely Girl Scouts, Elementary School Classrooms, LGBTQ+ partnerships, High School Students and more), Stempower mentors work through creative, fun, and unique curriculum uniquely designed by members to engage younger groups, while fostering an interest in STEM and developing classroom or workplace confidence through these activities. In collaboration with EPICS (Engineering Projects in Community Service) and GEMS (Girls Excelling in Math and Science), Stempower mentors will guide high school students through the EPICS design process for a STEM-based community service project. Interested members can be in any major at Purdue, we are always looking for new perspectives and unique connections to potential future partnerships we can work with!To join Stempower, please complete the 2024 Application located in the "Forms" section below (& linked here: https://forms.gle/oJHLXfK4dErWDb2fA note that applications are reviewed constantly with no official time you must join by for any given year.
