American Lung Cancer Screening Initiative - University of Michigan Chapter
STEM
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States, but what many people don't know is that lung cancer can be cured when identified early enough. Lung cancer screening lowers the chances of dying from lung cancer by 20-25%. So, why are only 5.7% of eligible Americans receiving screening every year? The American Lung Cancer Screening Initiative seeks to accelerate the uptake of lung cancer screening by raising awareness among the public as well as government officials. The University of Michigan chapter continues this effort at a local level. There are many opportunities to get involved in ALCSI, from canvassing communities, to contacting local officials, creating content, and more. We our advised directly by University of Michigan physician and are also connected to a network of physicians across the country through their involvement with ALCSI. This club is a great way to make a large impact with relatively low commitment as well as an opportunity for pre-med students to grow their network with physicians across the country.
