STEM
The University of Michigan Autonomous Robotic Vehicle Team (UMARV) is a student-led project team founded in the fall of 2016, with the goal to create a fully autonomous robotic vehicle for the Intelligent Ground Vehicle Competition held annually at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. We incorporate sensor fusion, path planning, computer vision, embedded systems, mechanical engineering, and more to provide our members with a hands-on introduction to autonomous robotics. We want to engage and educate our community about intelligent and autonomous systems, through outreach efforts like demos and hands-on workshops where audiences can interact with our vehicle and learn more about autonomous systems. In 2024, we competed at IGVC and ended with a third place design finish, demonstrating our commitment to innovation. We will strive to improve our standing over the next academic year as we look to complete the Auto-Nav course and begin Self-Drive. Moreover, we will be scaling our vehicle to the size of a compact car over the course of the next several academic years. All the work we do is driven by our core beliefs:Hands-on education complements classroom learningThe work we do has a larger social impactAll students, regardless of their backgrounds, can participate in roboticsWe envision a world where autonomous robotics is used to solve many problems that face us around the world, and it all starts here. We would like to invite you and your organization to become a part of our journey. Check us out at umarv.com!
