Global Health Alliance at the University of Michigan
Political & Advocacy
Our Model Global health equity starts within our local communities, which is why the Global Health Alliance at the University of Michigan (GHA) is proud to partner locally as well as globally. We and our partner organizations, Green Umbrella School in Cambodia and Avalon Housing and Washtenaw Literacy in Michigan, aim to maintain long-term partnerships in the name of sustainability to maximize impact. The rights to education, housing, and basic literacy are some of the most important health determinants, and their impacts can have generational effects. GHA aims to support our partner organizations through mutual learning, respect, and understanding. By engaging with self-sufficient local organizations, we gain valuable insights that help us support international partners, like Green Umbrella School, in their journey toward self-sufficiency. About UsOur chapter of the Global Health Alliance is an independent student-run organization and one of the nation's first to partner with three local and international non-profit organizations. Our first partner is Avalon Housing in Ann Arbor, MI. We work with them by helping run the front desk, beautification projects, and art events. Our second partner is Washtenaw Literacy, also in Ann Arbor, MI. With them, we teach English as a Second Language (ESL) to local community members. Our partner outside of the United States is Green Umbrella School in the Putsor Community near Phnom Penh, Cambodia, which believes in the potential of today's youth. Green Umbrella provides quality education to disenfranchised families to achieve sustainable development, facilitates leadership programs to enhance confidence and unity within the community, and leads livelihood workshops for adults and English classes for children. We raise an annual $5,000 for our international partner and assist with their assessment research and education modeling during our 3-week trip every summer. At our Monday night meetings, we plan fundraising and volunteer events and hold discussion-based lessons about public health issues. Why we are a global health club:GHA is a global health club because we understand that health does not follow political borders. Global health work is more than collaborating with partners in lower-income countries; it recognizes the local and international connection. Our work abroad informs us of how we solve complex challenges at home and vice versa. We aim to address some of the most significant social determinants of health: education, housing, and literacy rates. Our work involves fundraising efforts combined with co-designing programming with our partners and reflects our commitment to addressing the issues affecting billions of people worldwide. Through our annual efforts with our partners and our weekly club discussions on campus, we aim to understand the complexities of public health issues and take meaningful action to create lasting change—locally and globally.
