Graduate Employees Organization
Political & Advocacy
The purpose of the Graduate Employees' Organization is to improve the living and working conditions of graduate students at the University of Michigan through collective bargaining and grassroots activism. The Graduate Employees' Organization is a labor union, founded by graduate students in 1970. Since winning our first contract in 1975, UM graduate workers collectively negotiate our employment terms which include salary, healthcare benefits and workplace protections.Members run this union. The collective action of graduate students is responsible for many of the concrete benefits that graduate employees now enjoy. Over the last 50 years, victories have included tuition waivers, health benefits, child care waivers and a standard setting non-discrimination language. Graduate employees across the country look to GEO as an example of what can be accomplished when we work together. Become a member at bit.ly/GEOMembership
