The Graduate Society of Black Engineers and Scientists (GSBES), formerly known as The Society of Minority Engineers and Scientists – Graduate Component (SMES-G), serves as an academic and social network for Black graduate students within the University of Michigan's STEM community. GSBES's primary aim is to recruit and retain Black graduate students within engineering and science disciplines through outreach and advocacy. We strive to meet real student needs and community demands, all whilst tackling issues centered on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). We provide a welcoming environment that is committed to personal, professional, and technical development while addressing critical graduate student issues. Through our programming, we help ensure that underrepresented students develop skills that contribute to scientific research and the University's learning environment, while positively impacting our communities. Our activities are focused on four main initiatives: Recruitment - Outreach - Advocacy - Retention
