What is Humanity First?Humanity First is an international NGO dedicated to advocating for human life around the world. Humanity First USA works together with global expertise and local leadership to empower communities to become self-sufficient. Humanity First USA was established as a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization in 2004 and is active in 64+ countries and has served 4,895,000+ people thus far. Our Initiatives @ U-MHumanity First Student Organizations (HFSO) have a host of initiatives to serve others locally, nationally, and internationally. HFSOs organize on their campuses and serve locally and abroad in underserved communities. We raise awareness, raise funds, and collaborate with other organizations for direct service. HFSOs have cared for people experiencing homelessness, older adults, refugees, students who need academic support, and countless others in local communities. Students grow their understanding of complex social issues and build leadership skills to make a difference. What is Gift of Health?Humanity First's medical programs are designed to improve the health and medical services in some of the world's most underserved communities, and our one-week Gift of Health trips allow volunteers to do just that. Gift of Health is an initiative that allows high-school, undergrad, and medical students to get hands-on experience working to alleviate global health disparities in rural communities in Mexico, Central America, and South America while providing free health care services, education, and medicines. Since our launch in 2012, we have provided primary care, pediatric and dental services, and medicines to 77,000+ adults and children. This trip is part of a broader vision of reaching out and providing health care in remote villages, where people in addition to other basic life necessities, are also deprived of preventive and medical needs. We are fortunate that some experienced healthcare professionals will be accompanying us, as well as a group of enthusiastic volunteers, including students from various universities across America.GOH Clinical Recap 12/17-23/23- Past Trip Reports - Guatemala 2023Guatemala 2018Guatemala 2017 What is The Education Project? The Education Project is an organization currently aligned under Humanity First USA, a 501c(3) non-profit. What is Gift of Sight?According to the World Health Organization, 1.3 billion people have vision impairment, and for 188.5 million that impairment is severe. With the Gift of Sight program, Humanity First USA has assisted in restoring the vision of people living in Mali, Burkina Faso, Guyana, and Guatemala. At U-M, our goal with Gift of Sight is to collect used eyeglasses from our local community. This is a sustainable solution for alleviating a global lack of supplies for those who have vision impairment but don’t have access to corrective lenses. The glasses will be shipped to a team of experienced medical professionals who work as part of the Gift of Sight initiative to be distributed to vulnerable communities internationally. We plan to set up donation boxes in common meeting places and eye clinics on/near campus and monitor them every month. Each month, we collect the glasses, ship them to a nearby processing center partnered with HF that measures them using a lensometer free of charge, and package the frames to be shipped.
