This is the University of Michigan Chapter of Music for Dementia (MFD), founded in 2019. MFD aims to help nursing home residents suffering from dementia cope with memory loss and find more joy in everyday life through a personalized music program. Familiar music helps them become more present and connected to their environment, so the program focuses on each individual by providing live performances and personalized playlists on digital devices. The club relies on volunteers to inquire about residents’ musical preferences and perform songs they would enjoy. All levels of expertise in instrument/vocals are welcome. MFD is a venue for volunteers to meet, form musical groups, and perform in front of an audience. UofM students mainly volunteer at the Brookdale and Orchard Hills care facilities in Ann Arbor, but we hope to expand to other facilities as well! Other sites are also available for those residing outside of Ann Arbor. Volunteer orientation is offered at the beginning of the semester and online workshops are provided throughout.
