PBAP is a law school student organization. Under the supervision of attorneys from Legal Services of South Central Michigan (LSSCM), we help Washtenaw County community members apply for and maintain public benefits including food assistance, cash assistance, state emergency relief, and Medicaid through the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services' MiBridges website. We also field questions about other public benefits-related issues. We help folks determine if they are eligible for benefits, why their benefits may have been cut off, or why they were denied.Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have helped clients over the phone. In the 2023-24 school year we also re-launched our in-person volunteer efforts at the Ann Arbor District Library and the Delonis Shelter. We look forward to continuing our in-person efforts at various District Library branches (including Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti), Delonis, and other sites in 2024-25.We provide training for new and returning members at the start of each semester to acquaint them with our services and the MiBridges website. PBAP provides law students with a valuable opportunity to participate in community service, learn about public interest and administrative law, and develop skills such as compassionate client interviewing and effective communication with government agencies.
