University of Michigan Young Science Innovators encourages socioeconomically disadvantaged students to enter the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and Medicine (STEM^2) by running a free week-long summer science camp, planned and run entirely by undergraduate and graduate University of Michigan student volunteers. The primary goals of U-MYScI are to (1) provide underprivileged students with an opportunity to explore the real-world links among science and engineering disciplines, (2) foster teamwork, enthusiasm, and career interests in science and engineering, and (3) use current bioinformatics , chemistry and educational research to develop mentoring, teaching, and learning methods that build student confidence in problem-solving.
