Behind the Glass: Immigration Reflections leads the Emory University community in informed advocacy and activism for U.S. immigrant communities. Changing immigration legal systems and policies can be difficult to understand. In order to be allies in this movement, our work thus includes visiting Stewart Detention Center, letter-writing to detained immigrants, and connecting with Emory faculty, legal experts, and Atlanta organizations well-versed on institutional aspects of US immigration. Students can maintain connections with detainees at Stewart Detention Center, the largest private detention facility in the US. They conduct humanitarian visits with undocumented immigrants detained at Stewart Detention Center. Amidst the pandemic, we have created a pen-pal program between detained immigrants and Emory University students, staff, and faculty. These are both a way of creating friendships with those separated and isolated, but also ensuring all detainees are living under sound conditions. Through letter writing corresponded and visitations, we, as a community, can gain a deeper understanding of the issue of immigration and detention from both factual and personal perspectives. We also plan to host panel events with guest speakers from leading law offices, organizations, and assemblies across the country who advocate for immigrant rights.
