AAO is dedicated to serving and advocating for the needs of autistic students in academia and elsewhere! We strive to accomplish this task by creating affinity spaces for autistic and neurodivergent students, correcting harmful narratives that are propagated in academia and the medical field, and combating ableism. AAO holds regular general body meetings to meet with members and gather insight for where we can direct our time and resources to be most effective, create a community of autistic, neurodiverse, and allied students, and to hear feedback. We also hold special events several times per year, such as Movie Nights and PowerPoint Nights, in order to create affinity spaces for autistic people. AAO meets regularly with Emory's Autism Advocacy Organization to coordinate special events and advocacy goals. Outside of regular events, AAO executive and general body members work to combat ableism through specific advocacy goals, such as changing school policy, or collaborating with other organizations.
