The history of exclusion in black communities has disproportionately affected drowning statistics for decades. African Americans under thirty are 1.5 times more likely to drown in swimming pools than their white counterparts. This is due to the fact that African American communities were not allowed to swim in public swimming pools in American history. This resulted in generations of African Americans not being properly educated on water safety. W.A.V.E. is destined to reduce and hopefully eliminate this statistic by providing free swimming lessons to memory students and the Atlanta community.
