Founded at Howard University in 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is the oldest Greek-letter organization established by African American college-trained women. The Sorority began with a group of college-trained women of color committed to making their college experiences meaningful and productive. Alpha Kappa Alpha balances individual importance with organizational strength and extends its legacy of service beyond college, addressing significant issues in families, communities, and global affairs. The Illustrious Iota Gamma Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., chartered on June 8, 1974, by fifteen extraordinary women known as The Black Jewels, has been a cornerstone of Northeastern University and the Greater Boston area. Our chapter enriches the community with impactful programs like voter education drives, Budgeting 101 workshops, and "Pretty Protected" self-defense workshops. We address mental health, food insecurity, and civic engagement within the Black community, supporting the local Boston area through initiatives like Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, "Kare Packages," and winter clothing drives. We also promote local Black-owned businesses through the "Buy Black, Spend Green Marketplace." Among our cherished events is the annual Step Fest Step Show, a beloved occasion that celebrates the rich African American art of stepping and fosters unity within the Northeastern and New England communities.Be sure to follow us on social media @iotagammaka to stay up to date with our programming and join us!
