We (Refugee Outreach Collective [ROC]) are a nonprofit that began in 2016 when students came together and recognized that they had to take a stand against xenophobia and the mass warehousing of people around the world. A crucial aspect to appreciating the tragedy of displacement and becoming an ally for resettling and displaced community is relationship-building. Through friendships, we believe tangible solutions may be discovered for various challenges displaced and resettling communities may face. Through relationship building, we work towards creating more inclusive and welcoming communities for those who are resettling to the area. At the MSU chapter, we have created partnerships with the Refugee Development Center and St. Vincent Catholic Charities to further build relationships with resettled families and create programs to educate ourselves about the transition these families go through. This includes volunteering as a tutor or becoming involved in the family-partnership program to share experiences and knowledge with one another. Furthermore, we recognize that refugee camps are inhumane and by their very nature organized to warehouse people. We work to challenge refugee camps as a normative concept, while pressuring our audiences and leaders to consider a better, more long-term solutions. Many of our fundraising events aim towards creating opportunities within refugee camps across the globe. For example, funding for Wifi in the camps to increase access to education, or helping women entrepreneurs in the camps to start their own businesses. There are many more programs that students can become involved in while creating a mutual environment of understanding and growth.
