Community Service & Volunteering
FLIP @ BostonU DescriptionFLIP  (First-Generation Low Income Partnership) @ BostonU aims to support our school’s first-generation and/or low-income (FGLI) students. The purpose of FLIP @ BostonU is three-fold: first, to build a community on campus for students who identify as FGLI; second, to create resources and work to maximize equal access to resources for those students who need them; finally, to advocate for and implement institutional change with the help of the institution.FLIP @ BostonU is also a chapter of FLIP National, a national nonprofit whose core tenet is centering student advocacy and the student's voice. FLIP National outlines seven target areas in which all FGLI issues and solutions fall, including those at Boston University: awareness and visibility, academic development, housing insecurity, food insecurity, professional development, student wellbeing, and community building, and financial support. With this partnership, we join a nationwide network of support and innovation consisting of FLIP National’s twenty other chapters, as well as the greater platform of FGLI and higher education nonprofits. Through our parent organization, we have access to their existing partnerships and initiatives, including a laptop lending library, FGLI conferences, and FGLI class confession pages. We work closely with the Newbury Center, the First-Generation center on campus, to build community amongst First-Generation and/or Low-Income students on campus, connect students with resources at BU and in Boston, put on programming that meets the needs of students (i.e. academic/professional development, financial resources, mental health, etc.) and generally provide support to students in whatever way they need to help them be successful at BU. In the past we have done student panels with prospective and admitted students, professional panels, professional headshots, study nights, social events (i.e. game nights, succulent decorating, scavenger hunts, museum trips, etc.), discussions about our (intersecting) identities and more.If you're interested in learning more about us you can join our mailing list here: https://forms.gle/9eBcFpxPujMtu1LH7
