Brain Exercise Initiative at Berkeley
Health
We are a 501 C3 nonprofit organization that is completely student-run. We work with the Alzheimer's Services of the East Bay to do simple brain exercises with people with Alzheimer's, consisting of writing, math, and trivia questions. Everything we do is based on the research of the Japanese scientist Ryuta Kawashima from Tokyo University. He’s been researching the brain for the entirety of his career and has found that simple brain exercises done with Alzheimer’s patients for just 30 minutes a day, five days a week, can really improve cognitive function and memory by activating the prefrontal cortex. We are operating through Zoom and in person in collaboration with senior homes around the UC Berkeley campus (both Southside and Northside) this year to do brain exercises and build friendships with community members to promote brain health and sustained independence.
