The Disability Rights Project (DRP) is partnered with Disability Rights California (DRC), a nonprofit organization founded in 1978 that is dedicated to defending, advancing, and strengthening the rights and opportunities of people with disabilities. Students participating in the Disability Rights Project will work with DRC’s Youth Practice Group and other law students from UC Irvine to provide advocacy support for youth with disabilities and families across the state. Students will be able to utilize and develop legal research and writing skills by conducting educational record reviews, drafting demand letters, writing policy memorandums, and drafting and filing California Department of Education Compliance Complaints. Additionally, students may have the opportunity to prepare for and attend Individual Education Program (IEP) meetings. Training will be provided and students will be well prepared to assist families. We will be working remotely for the Fall Semester with potential opportunities for working in-person in some form in the Spring. Prior experience with disability rights-related work is not required!
