MissionCapoeira Club of UIUC will engage the UIUC student body in the practice ofCapoeira, an Afro-Brazilian martial art that incorporates movement, dance, singing, instrumentation, and community building. Practitioners of Capoeira will gain the physical and mental health benefits associated with the discipline and self-mastery that accompany any martial art. They will also get hands-on experience with aspects of Afro-Brazilian culture contained within the African diaspora by engaging with the history, music, language, and oral traditionthat characterize Capoeira. Our classes will be led by Mestre Denis Chiaramonte of the CapoeiraAngola Center IL under the guidance of Mestre João Grande (João Oliveira dos Santos) who is based in New York, NY. Classes will be open to all students, staff, and faculty free of charge and will be offered in partnership with the University YMCA and the Luso-Brazilian Association of UIUC.Membership BenefitsCapoeira Club at UIUC members will gain opportunities to strengthen their mental and physical health through hands-on experience and training in the art of Capoeira Angola. Through physical training sessions as well as musical practice, students will grow as individuals as well as gain a cultural appreciation for Afro-Brazilian cultural arts.
