Career Development & Networking
SHAC is designing and building a more sustainable world through interdisciplinary building projects focused on energy, affordability, and scalability. We work closely with professionals and our community to promote and implement equitable building development processes and informed sustainability educational programs. All of our work draws heavily from political, urban planning, architectural, systems, and engineering theory.
As a student-run organization at UC Berkeley, we provide opportunities for eager learners to apply academic knowledge to hands-on projects and gain experience in cutting-edge technologies and tools. Through our projects, members of the team will gain a better understanding of design processes, sustainable technologies, construction, marketing strategies, and other valuable technical and social skills. We participate in local and international competitions (eg. The Tiny House Competition and Solar Decathlon, respectively) where team members are encouraged to deepen their knowledge on their areas of interest.
Through participation in these hands-on projects, members of the team will gain a better understanding of design processes, sustainable technologies, construction, marketing strategies, and other valuable technical and social skills, all the while gaining real world experience. By applying this knowledge to the creation of highly efficient houses that rely entirely on renewable energy sources, students will have the opportunity to convert abstract concepts into a tangible learning experience and product. Our projects will serve as a platform to showcase solar and renewable energy technologies in addition to contributing to an ever-broadening body of work about sustainable building practices, embodying Berkeley’s innovative spirit and leadership in the realms of sustainability, engineering, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
