Engineers in Action works to provide a sustainable solution to poverty in underserved communities located in South America and Africa by annually funding, designing, and implementing a suspended footbridge project in previously isolated populations. These pedestrian bridges provide year-round access to schools, medical facilities, freshwater access points, markets, job opportunities, and more. All skills and majors are welcome, as there are several tasks requiring broad skill sets and interests. Our team of dedicated students has previously traveled to Bolivia in the summer of 2019 and was supposed to travel to Eswatini (located in southern Africa) in the summer of 2020, but those plans were canceled due to the Covid pandemic. EIA (on a National level) has constructed a total of 85 footbridges in 11 different countries, serving over 150,000 previously isolated individuals worldwide. These projects engage the local community in the construction, create a sustainable solution to poverty, and give students hands-on experience through extensive responsibilities in the design and construction process. Past EIA bridge builds have brought about a 12% increase in children enrolled in school, an 18% increase in healthcare treatment, a 59% increase in women in the labor market, and a 75% increase in farm profits. In Summer 2021, 5 students from the organization traveled to Clendenin, West Virginia as part of the 2021 EIA In-Country program that was created because of COVID-19 restrictions. We spent 2 weeks in rural West Virginia constructing a 25-ft long vehicular bridge alongside professional mentors and community members. Join the EIA family as we get hands on experience designing and constructing structures, build relationships with corporate sponsors who are always on the lookout for new talent, and make a huge impact on our local and international communities!
