Academic
Founded in 1996, AMSA UT represents the undergraduate branch of the American Medical Student Association which has chapters in medical schools all across the country. We serve as a link between students interested in medicine and practicing physicians from various specialties. AMSA maintains and offers to its members an important social network that has experience with applying to medical school, preparing for the MCAT, and taking classes.
At our general meetings, we host professional speakers such as physicians from a range of specialties, admissions personnel from medical schools, and a variety of other health-related professionals.
Our organization also offers several volunteering, social, and development opportunities throughout the year:
We volunteer with local organizations such as Austin Speech Labs, Aids Services of Austin, Central Texas Food Bank, and local churches and shelters. We also partner with large organizations in events like Lights Out for Lymphoma and Austin Marathon. Volunteerism is an integral aspect of community and health advocacy, and AMSA is committed to providing members with these meaningful experiences.
AMSA also acts as a support network and family for college students, and our welcoming community is unmatched. We host casual events such as movie nights, game nights, cooking and craft socials, camping, holiday mixers, and more to foster member interaction, as well as larger celebrations such as banquet and boat party to reward students for all their hard work and accomplishments. Students have the option of joining "FAMSA," our unique mentorship program that offers mentees additional resources and friendships that last a lifetime.
Lastly, we offer planning, interview, and application workshops for our members so that they can effectively plan out their undergraduate years in preparation for medical school, sharpen their interviewing/conversational skills, and work towards achieving their dream as a physician. Our local and national partnerships like Kaplan, the Princeton Review, Jack Westin, and MedSchoolCoach offer all the scholarships and resources needed to help members succeed.
AMSA has a long history of success in its missions of health advocacy, education, and community. Here at UT, we bring those pillars to life in a big, Texas-sized way! Hook 'em!
