The Texas Bengali Students Association (BSA) is primarily a social and cultural organization that has been attracting & connecting the students of the Bengali diaspora since 2011 (and even as far back as 1998 in a different iteration/generation!). Since then, Texas BSA has promoted, nurtured, and preserved the rich Bengali culture around campus and within the greater Bengali community in Austin.
From philanthropy projects to celebrating genuinely traditional Bengali events, BSA serves as a platform to bring about a sense of unity and cultural awareness among its members. In being a part of this organization, BSA instills positive, culturally rich values amongst its members, offers avenues for leadership, and promotes self-betterment.
BSA is not exclusive only to students of Bengali heritage, we welcome everyone! Simply think of BSA as a big family that empowers and supports one another through the expression of Bengali culture and the interlinked histories of Bengali peoples in Bangladesh, West Bengal, Assam, Jharkhand and Tripura.
Major events to look forward to are our annual "Tour De Austin"/"Austin Ghure Berano" event where we tour the city of Austin, have a picnic, play games outside and take great pictures together, End-of-Semester Dawaats where we all dress up in cultural clothing and eat biryani and other Bengali foods, Intramural sports, performing dances at "Mock Mehndi", "Basant" and "Pohela Boishakh", and so many more events!
Of note, BSA also contributes to charities and helps to fund important causes such as raising awareness of children literacy, a major issue of the country of which we are culturally representing. Recently in 2019, BSA held samosa sales on campus and volunteered at a charity concert alongside Austin's "Bengali Association of Greater Austin" to raise money for the Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh. BSA also volunteered with UT Austin's "Sustainability Squad" to help sort and recycle waste produced by home football games to ensure a cleaner planet.
