Meow Mates is an organization dedicated to promoting the welfare of stray cats on and off campus. We recognize that this is not a job that can be done alone. Thus, we want to foster a community where everyone is welcome at all times. As a result, we will offer socials, meetings, and regular elections to ensure that members can always participate and have their voices heard. We also will have a group chat, social media, and website for members–where they can always keep up to date with the club and stay connected with others. In addition, we acknowledge that many students leave their beloved pets behind at home. As a result, we hope to make this club a safe space where members can help fill that gap by interacting with other students who love animals just as much as they do, in turn improving campus morale and student mental health. As for caring for local stray cats, we will promote officer-led activities–including but not limited to building houses for cats to keep them warm during winter, cooperating with local cat cafes, and receiving teaching from cat rescue shelters. This assortment of activities should enable us to help stray cats in all different kinds of ways, all while keeping activities fun and entertaining for members. Safety is also essential to us because we will be working with stray animals. Our ultimate goal above all else is to guarantee that neither member nor animal gets hurt during any of our activities. To do this, we will keep students informed of campus safety rules, such as not feeding the cats on west campus. Our club will also require members to receive proper training before they can participate in any volunteering. Likewise, we will follow all of the advice given by the professional organizations we cooperate with, such as the APA and the Austin Humane Society. Ultimately, this knowledge will assist everyone involved in the club in how to engage safely with not only the cats here in Austin, but also in their home towns and wherever they go after they graduate. Overall, Meow Mates hopes to fill a gap in student groups here at UT by offering students a chance to assist with the campus cats, build strong friendships with other students devoted to animal welfare, and educate the community about stray cat health. With our club, we will foster a community where both members and stray cats feel safe, welcome, and protected.
