One of the top most desired majors at UT, RTF is one of a handful of film programs in the country that's ranked in the top ten in both film production and in the academic study of media.
In just the 2013-2014 year, RTF students have won some of the biggest competitions in the country and the world.

Annie Silverstein’s MFA narrative thesis, SKUNK, won first prize at the 2014 Cannes International Film Festival’s Cinéfondation Selection program, beating out over 1600 films from around the world. SKUNK also swept the student awards at the 2014 British Academy of Film and Television Arts – LA.
Out of more than 7500 submissions, a script co-written by MFA screenwriting alumni Alisha Brophy and Scott Miles was one of the four winners for the 2014 Academy Nicholl Fellowship in screenwriting.
Beth Chatelain’s MFA thesis, MY SISTER SARAH won the 2013 International Documentary Association student documentary award.
And Brian Schwarz’s graduate thesis film, OL’ DADDY, took the Gold Medal in the narrative category at the 2013 Student Academy Awards.

What makes UT RTF such an exciting place to study film, besides our award-winning and dedicated faculty of working media professionals, is our strong emphasis on the craft of cinematic storytelling and the broad skill base we require our students to master.
We are diverse. One quarter of our majors are Hispanic, many the first in their family to go to college. We are a bargain. UT RTF is one of the most affordable top-ranked film programs in the country, with a tuition that’s a fraction of that at our peer institutions.
We have great teachers who are working filmmakers and screenwriters. Instructors Kat Candler (HELLION) and Todd Rohal (RAT PACK RAT) premiered films at Sundance this year. PJ Raval’s feature documentary BEFORE YOU KNOW is screening in theaters across the country. Screenwriter Cindy McCreery just finished writing the script for Miranda Lambert’s first feature, SOMETHING IN THE WATER. And RTF Chair Paul Stekler, whose film GETTING BACK TO ABNORMAL just aired on PBS’s POV series, was named Variety’s 2014 Mentor of the Year.
We are thorough. As one of the few departments rated top ten in both production and media studies, RTF offers our students extensive studio and technique courses, covering all aspects of media production, history and theory. And when they graduate, our students go on to enjoy a wide range of careers—both commercially and independently—including directing, editing, producing, cinematography, special FX, game design, screenwriting, scholarship, and teaching. Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey and prolific director Robert Rodriguez are just the most visible of the many successful UT alumni working in the industry.
We are innovators. The Moody Foundation funded a five-year program in 3-D production—the first such program in the nation. With new classes added each semester, UT3D provides students specialized training by leading Hollywood media professionals, who’ve been working in 3-D for decades. UT3D students produce a range of 3-D content — including plays, sports, documentaries and narrative pieces — and explore recent 3-D innovations such as “glasses-free” 3-D for television, tablets, cellphones and small display devices.
And finally, we are very fortunate to be a part of the thriving and collaborative Austin film community and to have the support of the Moody College of Communication.
