Texas Immersive Institute (TXI) is a program within the Moody College of Communication at the University of Texas at Austin designed to create responsible, responsive, and remarkable solutions through the power of immersive storytelling. We empower artists, scientists, and humanists (aka Explorers) with access to cutting-edge technology and research to design experiences that address significant challenges in today’s world.

Throughout the year, TXI hosts innovative events for the UT and Austin community. Explorer-in-Residence (Fall semester) invites a prominent figure from the immersive media and technology community to engage with the UT campus for a week. This esteemed guest sparks lively discussions with students and faculty, enriches classroom experiences as a guest lecturer, and culminates as the keynote speaker at TXI’s Explorer-in-Residence Night. The Social Impact BuildFest (Spring semester) is a multi-day event that welcomes students from all majors to collaborate on creating novel solutions for social issues in our community. This event is open to everyone, regardless of their technical background. The TXI Immersive Showcase marks the culmination of the academic year and the TXI’s course sequence. Students in the advanced class produce this immersive experience which is open to the Austin community.

Play is the heart of TXI. We invite and encourage people to visit the Texas Immersive Lab, located on the 5th floor of the Jesse H. Jones Communication Center. Our lab is open to all UT students and faculty who want to explore, play, and learn using the latest Extended Realty (XR) technologies and products. It is a safe and welcoming environment that aims to break down the hesitations one may have regarding these new tools and technologies.
We hold free workshops and open lab/demo nights during the school year for anyone who wants to improve or practice their digital literacy skills. Visit us soon!

Texas Immersive is an innovative research institute that expands teaching and learning beyond the physical and time-bound, traditional format. We offer unique courses that specialize in the immersive field to teach students how to become experience designers, strategists, and technologists. UT students from all majors are welcome to apply!

TXI is a hub for scholars conducting experiential, interactive, and story-driven projects. We welcome client briefs from academia and various industries including healthcare, sustainability, education, business, entertainment, among others, to partner with us on addressing real-life problems through an immersive experience designed primarily with our audience in mind. We aim for these audiences to be inspired and feel empowered to act and help us make a change in the world.
