Counselors for Social Justice | NYU Chapter
None
Counselors for Social Justice are counselors or future counselors who recognize the systemic barriers that counselors, students, clients, schools, communities, and minorities face both within the profession of counseling and in society as a whole. This chapter aims to use its power, privilege, and passion to help address disparities, inequities, and other obstacles that our members and the NYU counseling community may face in the profession. There will also be a focus on social justice at large, to be able to include those who are not represented within the CSJ NYU and to be able to tackle widespread, pressing issues of social injustice. We will use personal and collective activism to approach issues; collaboration will be key in addressing these matters, and the involvement of CSJ NYU members will aim to establish a partnership, curiosity, and influence towards the social injustices addressed, both inside and outside this chapter. We will learn how to incorporate our activism into our roles as students, future clinicians, clinicians, clients, educators, researchers, or other applicable positions through the community of CSJ NYU, building relationships with others and impacting those around us through our passion for social justice, social change, and mental health counseling. Further, this chapter will try to establish a community that fosters connection for students. It will also allow students opportunities to take part in furthering their education, training, research, social justice activism, meetings, volunteer positions, and others that go beyond what is taught in classes at NYU. The purpose of which is to construct professional identities within mental health counseling that promotes social justice advocacy. Lastly, this chapter commits itself to social justice, equal opportunity, equity, multiculturalism, other progressive causes, and most importantly- its members. All members are encouraged to share their identities and work towards their own individual achievements regarding how they perceive social justice. The CSJ NYU will do its absolute best to create a space that is safe, welcoming, encouraging, and fosters growth for everyone involved for ALL members.
