The Health Career Collaborative (HCC) is a nationwide program with 25 branches that provides an exciting link between high school students and teaching partners in health and medicine to bring to life the possibilities of further studies and careers in the health professions. To do this, we have established a sustainable partnership between NYU and a local Title I high school to provide mentorship, an engaging health curriculum, and exposure to health careers to high school students from low-income, underrepresented minority communities.

The three-year curriculum is case-based and designed to foster active hands-on learning. In the 10th grade, students encounter cases commonly seen in the emergency room, exploring a range of questions associated with each case related to epidemiology, clinical presentation, complications, diagnosis, work-up, and multidisciplinary management. In 11th grade, the students deepen their knowledge with public health modules, such as trauma, nutrition, and sexually transmitted infections. Finally, in 12th grade, the students identify a healthcare need of their community and design a community health initiative (such as a health fair) to help address it.
