BASIS (Brothers And Sisters In Science) was established in 2002 as a joint undertaking between the NYUSoM students and administration as part of a new medical school initiative: the Programs for Preparatory Education in Science and Medicine (PPESM). These programs envision the creation of a seamless pipeline through which students across the educational spectrum -- from middle school through college -- are guided towards pursuing higher education, particularly in the science and health professions.
