The NYU Student Association for Psychedelic Studies (SAPS) offers education and networking opportunities to the NYU Graduate student body, considering the latest advancements in psychedelic research and practice and their implications in social work and psychotherapeutic settings. By bringing together students, researchers, and practitioners from diverse fields and backgrounds, SAPS creates a unique platform for sharing knowledge and sparking innovation and ethical practice. We are dedicated to equipping future clinicians and researchers with a thorough understanding of the current landscape and future prospects of psychedelic-assisted therapies. Our activities include hosting seminars, workshops, and guest lectures from leading experts in the field, facilitating rich academic dialogue and practical insights.
The field of psychotherapy is currently experiencing a renaissance of psychedelic research and treatment modalities. Though regularly practiced in indigenous communities, prohibition imposed an injunction on psychedelic research in the first half of the 20th Century. Recent changes in cultural perception and legislation has ushered in a new era of psychedelic integration in the Western clinical setting. Clinical psychedelic assisted psychotherapy has shown exceptionally positive outcomes in the treatment of trauma, depression, anxiety, addiction, grief cycles and end-of-life anxiety. Future clinicians will be well served by a fluency and familiarity with the emerging research in this exciting and rapidly growing field. Current estimates place MDMA therapies becoming legally available to licensed clinicians in the near future, with psilocybin already becoming legal for psychotherapy in a growing number of U.S. states. Ketamine therapy is currently practiced widely by mental health professionals and has well documented success when integrated with traditional talk therapy to address treatment resistant depression.
Members of the NYU Student Association for Psychedelic Studies will enter the job market uniquely prepared to participate in cutting edge research, deploy strengths based strategies for harm reduction and offer effective, safe and accessible therapy grounded in the principles which guide the field of social work and psychotherapy.
